PARKS FOR POLLINATORS – BIOBLITZ
September 1 – 30, 2022
Thanks to the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation, the City of Corona Community Services Department is once again hosting a BioBlitz to be held throughout the month of September in support of the national Parks for Pollinators campaign.
What’s a BioBlitz? A BioBlitz is an event where community members work with City staff to create a snapshot of the variety of wildlife that can be found in local parks, neighborhoods, and hillsides. To participate, community members will use an app to take pictures of plants, insects and animals to see what wildlife is present in the park on the day of the event and provide the park system with more information about local pollinators, which are essential to our ecosystem. Your findings can have real life scientific impact!
Parks for Pollinators is a national campaign focused on raising public awareness of the current pollinator crisis by encouraging local action and positioning parks as a national leader in advancing pollinator health. This campaign continues to assess the public’s understanding of pollinators, to outline actions to protect them and to increase local park and recreation agencies’ capacity to promote pollinator protection within parks and to engage and educate their communities on what they can do to help.
ANYONE CAN BE A CITIZEN SCIENTIST
The Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz event uses an application called iNaturalist. One of the world’s most popular nature apps, iNaturalist helps you identify the plants and animals around you. Get connected with a community of over a million scientists and naturalists who can help you learn more about nature! What’s more, by recording and sharing your observations, you’ll create research-quality data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature. iNaturalist is a joint initiative by the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society.
