The federally mandated annual census of homeless persons known as the Point-in-Time-Count (PITC) is meant to be a one-day snapshot of persons living either on the streets or in short-term shelters. The 2019 Riverside County Youth Point-in-Time Count will take place between January 29th and January 31st, 2019, between the hours of 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. This is a multi-day count and survey to identify how many youth ages 24 and under are homeless in Riverside County. This multi-day count and survey is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to:

• Identify how many youth ages 24 and under are homeless in Riverside County;
• Determine the need for youth homeless services; and
• Guide decisions about how to use available resources.

The Department of Public Social Services facilitates the count alongside Operation SafeHouse and hundreds of volunteers across the county.  Volunteers who have participated in a previous PIT Count, will have the option to complete the online training program beginning. First-time volunteers will be required to sign-up for one of DPSS's onsite training sessions throughout Riverside County. Once the volunteers complete their online volunteer registration, they will receive a training registration link. 

There are 28 cities in Riverside County and our goal is to conduct the count in as many cities as possible during this year’s count. Please consider helping us:

• Increase public awareness (spread the word!) by sharing the attached flyer to help recruit more youth-friendly volunteers (including youth!).
• Volunteer as a site coordinator – Coordinates with registered street-count volunteers regarding final deployment instructions such as where and when to report.

The PIT Count data is used at both the national and local levels to help inform discussions and decision-making around homeless issues, funding, and the design of a system of care that best serves the most vulnerable people while maximizing limited resources.
