CORONA FIRE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES NEW LIFE-SAVING BLOOD PROGRAM
CORONA, CA– In a groundbreaking advancement for emergency medical services in the region, the Corona Fire Department has launched a prehospital blood transfusion program that enables emergency responders to deliver life-saving blood products directly to trauma victims on scene.
This advanced capability was developed through a consortium of five California counties who established the “CAL DROP” Prehospital Blood Transfusion program, receiving approval last September from the State EMS Agency. Through a strategic partnership with LifeStream Blood Bank, Corona Fire Department is one of the few agencies nationwide to operationalize this progressive life-saving protocol. This program enhances trauma care by allowing emergency teams to stabilize patients experiencing severe blood loss en route to the hospital, significantly improving patient outcomes.
LifeStream’s expertise and resources ensure a reliable supply of life-saving blood products, and the department will host regular blood drives to support this initiative. Community members can contribute by donating at LifeStream’s site. In addition to LifeStream this program is also supported by the American Red Cross who provides blood products to local region trauma centers.
This initiative marks a significant leap forward in local trauma care, underscoring Corona’s commitment to life-saving innovation in emergency response. By integrating this advanced capability, Corona Fire is enhancing its trauma response and delivering critical care to those in need even before they reach the hospital. A press conference will be held on December 2, 2024, to announce the launch of this program, highlighting its transformative impact on community safety.
