STUDENT FOUND IN POSSESSION OF FIREARM

CORONA, CA– On February 7, 2025, a student on-campus at Centennial High School in Corona, California, was found in possession of a handgun and ammunition.
A Corona-Norco Unified School District (CNUSD) contracted vendor was conducting unannounced searches of the school campus using narcotic and contraband detection canines. A canine alerted on a student’s backpack and a search of the backpack revealed a handgun. The firearm was unloaded, but next to it was a loaded magazine.
The Corona Police Department has full-time school resource officers at all high school campuses and our officer was onsite during the canine search. Our officer arrested the student, called for additional resources, and they initiated a School Threat Assessment and Response (STAR) Protocol investigation.
The student’s parents consented to a search of their residence, where officers did not locate any other contraband. The student was later transported to Riverside Juvenile Hall.
Corona Police personnel and CNUSD staff work together daily to ensure the safety and security of our schools, students, and staff. This incident highlights the importance of this relationship and how both group’s proactive approach to safety is paramount to our success.
