Community Wildfire Protection Plan

Nestled at the base of the Cleveland National Forest, the City of Corona boasts beautiful landscapes and views, but also faces significant wildfire risk at the wildland-urban interface. As many as 15,000 Corona households are within an identified High Fire Hazard Zone.
Corona Fire Department has established a Fire Safe Council, FireSafe Corona, made up of residents and fire officials to prepare our community from catastrophic wildfires. Fire safe councils are grassroots community-based organizations which share the objective of making California’s communities less vulnerable to catastrophic wildfire. Fire safe councils accomplish this objective through education programs and projects such as fuel breaks or mitigation projects to protect area residents against an oncoming wildfire and to provide fire fighters with a place to fight the oncoming fire.
Completed
✔ Community Risk Assessment - A community risk assessment considers, at a minimum, fuel hazards, risk of wildfire occurrence and community values to be protected both in the immediate vicinity and the surrounding zone where potential fire spread poses a realistic threat.
✔ Community Wildfire Protection Plan
✔ Grant Programs - FireSafe Corona will continue to seek out grants to fund mitigation and prevention programs. To date, the Corona Fire Department has secured a $60,000 grant from the California Fire Safe Council, $5,000 from Southern California Edison, and $200,000 from Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes.
Upcoming
✔ Enhancing our Website and Social Media presence – Aims to expand the website’s framework and social media platforms to improve functionality and attract viewers
✔ Building an Education and Marketing Plan – Interactive plan to establish a road map for FireSafe Corona.
✔ Community Home Ignition Workshops – Focus on defensible space concepts and hardening structures to protect homes from wildfires.
